What we've learned from eight years without a fight (and how you can use it for free with no strings attached)

Hey Reader,

Zelda and I have been building and writing things, and I want to share with you what's come out of it.

Here's the short version of why:
Everything we share with others, we had to learn the hard way first, and we each lament that we spent a lot of years in agony from that process.

Our marriage didn't start as the one we have now. To be transparent, it started out emotionally unsafe. Endless exasperating arguments, feeling like adversaries, two people who loved each other and kept hurting each other anyway.

You may have heard me say that we haven't had a fight in more than eight years now. That is true. What we've wanted for a long time is to hand people what got us here, in a form you can actually use, without having to work with us first (or at all), and with or without investing a penny.

That's what we've been building. Four things, all free.

The Emotional Safety Assessment

If the same arguments keep happening in your relationship and you can't tell anymore what's actually driving them, the assessment will show you where to look deeper. It maps the patterns underneath the conflict, where you're stuck, and what the next step of growth looks like for you specifically. Most people who take it tell me they've never seen themselves described this accurately. I

Free Course: She's Not Crazy & He's Not Distant

Our brand new course, in which Zelda and I have a dozen or so very raw and unfiltered conversations over ten days. It's built around the oldest misunderstanding in marriage: he looks at her emotional world and calls it crazy, or impossible, or too much. She looks at his grounded stillness and calls it distance. Neither of them is seeing what's actually there, and each of them is hurting the other with the misreading.

We built it straight from our own thirty-four years, including the parts we had to apologize to one another for (and yes, men, women do apologize when you become someone that is safe), and it's the course I wish someone had handed us when we were still woefully misunderstanding how marriage works, and not truly seeing one another.

Article: Why My Wife and I Haven't Had a Fight in More Than Eight Years

The full story of how our marriage changed, what died so the real one could begin, and what a fight-free marriage actually looks like from the inside. People send us notes about this one more than anything else we've written.

Article: Why Holding Space Doesn't Make You a Doormat

The objection I hear more than any other is that listening to an upset woman without shutting her down or blowing up will make a man look weak. This article takes that apart.

Take whatever is useful to you. Share any of it with anyone you think needs it. There's nothing waiting on the other side of these links, no funnel, no upsell, no daily emails you didn't ask for. We made all this because this work changed our lives, and we want it in the hands of anyone it can help.

You might be wondering "what's the catch? why free?"
You're not the first! My clients, community, and several entrepeneurs have told me we give too much away. We do give a lot away, but I disagree that it's too much, because it's who we enjoy being. If you're curious to know why, I wrote about that here.

Rooting for you,
– Sven & Zelda

Hey Reader, I've been talking with lots of men and women lately about emotional safety: what it looks like in relationships, how we create it, and what gets in the way. Most of the coaching conversations my wife Zelda and I have with other couples these days seem to reveal misunderstandings and misconceptions people are picking up from the invasion of therapy-speak into social media, where therapists themselves have increasingly become influencers and celebrities, competing in the same...

It's been a while since I've written, and I hope things are going well for you during my long absence from email. The thing is... I loathe daily emails and SPAM, and want to reserve getting in touch for the times I feel it's important to share. I've been heads down working on a new website, two new books, and a lot of new material and resources to help men and women navigate emotional safety (mostly free!), and haven't had much time to come up for air.But as is often the case, I recently felt...

Hey Reader, The Othello Error I was today years old when I learned there was actually a name for something I have watched quietly destroy trust, safety, and connection in marriages for a long time. I've really come to admire the insights of Dr. Yael Schonbrun of Brown University. I recently saw her mention something called the Othello Error — a term originally coined by psychologist Paul Ekman, drawn from Shakespeare. Othello becomes convinced his wife Desdemona has been unfaithful, and as he...
